Unlike previous artists I’ve featured, John Joseco is actually a relatively competent artist. He doesn’t make any hilariously bad anatomy errors. He doesn’t have any bad OC’s. So what’s the big deal?

Not that they shouldn’t have character brought into their human appearance, but we’re talking about a show that gives its character through their voices, movements and accessories. Who otherwise all share the same base.

Ah, but here’s the difference.

There’s little variation in the ponies in the show because, not only is it part of the show’s aesthetic, but also, because of how many characters there are, it would take much, much, much longer to animate if every pony character were distinct in body style. And since it is animated, there is much more room to express the characters beyond merely their appearance, such as, like you said, voices and behaviours, and even down to the way they move and carry themselves.

In static art, however, especially when translating them into a human form, you don’t get those opportunities. You have to be creative and find other ways to distinguish them. And making every one of the characters look the same when there’s so many ways to set them apart just reeks of a lack of effort or original thought. 

And hey, give the show some credit. It manages to not have Granny Smith look exactly like characters at least a quarter of her age. This is already far more distinction that JohnJoseco has managed.

The show uses copied body structures to save the already overworked staff time to make the overall project look better. JohnJoseco uses copied body structures because he’s a lazy fuck.

I like the idea of shared structures, and I think despite it being static art, one could use consistent displays of emotion and, motion of figure to translate a character. I think using different noses, temples, framework, etc is, well, a nice idea, but it, well, for me, steals these characters away from a very special, undefined zone, and tries to place them in a dirty, rough and real humanity that, I personally wouldn’t have them in. I guess that’s the idea of “humanization” but, well, ok my opposition to humanity is clouding my judgement here, sorry XD

To be clear, though, I don’t like JJ’s base humans, and though he has poniforms alright, he’s for the most part a decent anime-trained internetartist who is on a pedestal about 2,200,000 pegeviews too high.
